Trading Sessions & Major Events

Understanding when different global markets are active is crucial for anticipating volatility and liquidity.

Asian Session (Tokyo)

12:00 AM - 09:00 AM GMT

Often characterized by lower volatility. Look out for BOJ announcements, Australian/New Zealand employment data, and Chinese economic releases.

European Session (London)

08:00 AM - 04:00 PM GMT

The most active session. Major events include ECB rate decisions, UK inflation data, and Eurozone PMI reports.

North American Session (New York)

01:00 PM - 10:00 PM GMT

Highly volatile, especially when overlapping with London. Key drivers include Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP), FOMC meetings, and US CPI data.

Trader Modes — Match the Calendar to Your Style

Every trader interacts with the market differently. Filter the calendar to highlight the events that matter to your strategy.

Day Trader (Scalper / Intraday)

Focuses strictly on High Impact events (Red folders) to capture immediate volatility spikes or step aside to avoid slippage. Ignores low-tier data.

Swing Trader

Monitors broader macroeconomic trends. Pays attention to Medium and High impact data to gauge central bank sentiment and shift in long-term momentum.

News Trader

Actively seeks out divergence between Forecast and Actual numbers. Thrives during NFP, CPI, and Rate Decisions to trade the breakout.

Building Your Watchlist and Alerts

Set up your calendar to work efficiently for you without being overwhelmed by noise.

Filter by Currency

Only trade GBP/USD? Turn off AUD, NZD, and JPY events. Focus on what moves your pairs to avoid distraction.

Set Impact Thresholds

Most traders can safely ignore "Low Impact" (Yellow) events. Filter for Medium and High to see the real market movers.

Pro Tip: Enable browser alerts for High Impact events 15 minutes prior to release so you can manage open positions accordingly.

How to Trade Around High-Impact News

News events can be incredibly lucrative, but they also carry significant risk. Follow these core principles.

Avoid the Spread Widening

In the seconds before a major release (like NFP), liquidity dries up and spreads widen massively. Entering a market order here often results in severe slippage.

Wait for the Dust to Settle

The initial spike is often a liquidity grab. Many professional traders wait 5 to 15 minutes after the release to establish the true directional trend.

Manage Existing Positions

If you are already in a trade leading up to a major event, consider tightening your stop loss, taking partial profits, or closing the trade entirely.

Warning: Trading directly during CPI or FOMC without a predefined plan and stop-loss is gambling, not trading.

A breakdown of the most critical economic indicators that move the foreign exchange markets.

Employment Data

Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP)

The premier US employment report. Measures job creation. High deviation from forecast causes massive USD volatility.

Unemployment Rate

Often released alongside NFP. A rising unemployment rate typically weakens the domestic currency.

Inflation & Central Banks

Consumer Price Index (CPI)

The primary measure of inflation. High CPI often forces central banks to raise interest rates, strengthening the currency.

Interest Rate Decisions

The ultimate market mover. Rate hikes attract foreign investment, while rate cuts depreciate the currency.
